What is Clarinex?

Clarinex, which is an antihistamine, reduces relieves symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose caused by histamine.
Clarinex is used to treat the symptoms of allergies, skin hives and itching.

Important information about Clarinex

Clarinex should be avoided if you are allergic to desloratadine or to loratadine (Claritin). The doctor should be informed about any potential liver or kidney disease or any allergies to the drug before taking this drug. This medication should not be administered to a child younger than 2 years old without a doctor's recommendation.
There are no known harmful effects of clarinex to the fetus. You should inform the doctor about your pregnancy or plan to become pregnant during treatment, prior to the drug administration. Lactating mothers should avoid Clarinex altogether. This medication is not to be given to a child younger than 18 years old without the advice of a doctor.

How should I take Clarinex?

Clarinex should be taken as instructed by your physician or the drug label. This medication should not be taken in larger amounts or for longer than recommended.
Clarinex is usually taken once per day.
The Clarinex pill should be swallowed as a whole.
The liquid form of Clarinex should only be measured with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, which may be obtained from your pharmacist for one.
The desloratadine orally disintegrating tablet (Clarinex RediTabs) should be keep the tablet in its blister pack until you are ready to take the medicine. The package must be opened and peeled back the foil from the tablet blister. Dry hands should be used to remove the tablet and place it on your tongue. The tablet should be allowed to dissolve in our mouth without chewing or swallowing.
The physician should be consulted if the symptoms persist.

What happens if I miss a dose?

The missed dose should be taken as soon as you remember, but it is not recommended to take extra medicine to make up for the skipped dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Emergency medical attention should be sought immediately in case of experiencing overdose symptoms such as fast heart rate.

Clarinex side effects

Some of the serious side effects include:
  • Fast heart rate;
  • fever, flu symptoms;
  • seizure (convulsions); or
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Some of the less serious Clarinex side effects may include:
  • dry mouth, sore throat, cough;
  • muscle pain;
  • drowsiness, tired feeling;
  • nausea, diarrhea; or
  • headache;
  • There may be other side effects as well.

Proper storage of Clarinex

Clarinex is to be stored at room temperature. Room temperature: 68 to 77 Degrees F or 20 to 25o C. It is to be kept in a tightly closed container. Keep Clarinex away from sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not place it in bathrooms. Keep Clarinex out of the reach of children and away from pets.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If the patient misses a dose then take the missed dose as soon as possible. If the scheduled next dose is near then skip the missed dose. Continue the rest of the course as usual. Do not take any other medicine to cover up the missed dose.
