What is Dovonex?
Dovonex is a drug and is the synthetic form of vitamin D. It helps in the growth of skin cells.
Uses
Dovonex is used to cure plaque psoriasis.
You might be prescribed Dovonex for uses other than those listed above. It may also be given along with other medicines for some other disease too. Contact your doctor or pharmacist about the uses of Dovonex.
How should I use Dovonex?
Wash your hands before and after applying Dovonex. Do not wash your hands if you are treating an area on your hand.
The affected area should be cleaned and dried before application of Dovonex. Apply the cream to the affected area only. Do not apply it on the rest of the skin too. Dovonex is not to be applied on the eyes, mouth and face. Do not use Dovonex on cuts or sores.
Dovonex is to be applied twice a day. Ask your doctor about the timings of your dose. At least 2 weeks will be used up for the effects to start taking place.
Do not use Dovonex more than prescribed. It is not to be used more than 100 grams per week.
What happens if I overdose?
If an overdose is suspected then contact your nearest medical center immediately.
Symptoms of an overdose include:
- Nausea;
- Vomiting;
- Headache;
- Fatigue;
- Weakness; or
- High level of calcium in the blood.
What are the possible side effects of Dovonex?
Serious side effects rarely take place. If you experience an allergic reaction then contact your doctor immediately and stop applying Dovonex.
You may face irritation of skin, burning, itching, swelling or peeling of the skin. These automatically reduce with the passage of the course. If there is any change in the color of your skin then contact your doctor immediately.
Warnings
Dovonex is used for the treatment of Psoriasis, so it is applied on the skin. Thus, it is important that when applying the skin should be clean and should not be used on skin that is sunburned, wind burned, chapped, dry or irritated. This can lead to worsening of the condition. Dovonex effect on pregnant women and unborn babies is not known, so talk to your doctor first before using it and get your doctors approval in case you are breastfeeding.
Never use Dovonex cream if you are allergic to any substance or chemical of it. If you suffer from high levels of Vitamin D in bloodstream or high calcium levels in your blood or urine, you should not use Dovonex. Also consult your doctor on the usage of Dovonex if you are taking any prescription, nonprescription or herbal medicine and/or dietary supplements. If you have kidney stones you should seek advice from you doctor before using Dovonex.
Proper storage of Dovonex
Dovonex is to be stored at room temperature. Room temperature: 68 to 77 Degrees F or 20 to 25o C. It is to be kept in a tightly closed container. Keep Dovonex away from sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not place it in bathrooms. Keep Dovonex out of the reach of children and away from pets.

What happens if I miss a dose?
If the patient misses a dose then take the missed dose as soon as possible. If the scheduled next dose is near then skip the missed dose. Continue the rest of the course as usual. Do not take any other medicine to cover up the missed dose.
