Elemite General Information
Elemite is a topical cream used for the treatment of scabies.
It is off-whitish in color and is available in vanishing base cream
The generic name of Elemite is Permethrin Cream and its brand names include Acticin and Elemite.
Uses
Elemite is used to treat scabies and is thus also known as scabicide. Scabies is a medical condition that is caused by tiny insects or mite which infests on the skin and cause irritation.
How to take/use Elemite
It is suggested that you apply the cream thoroughly all over the body including folds of the skin as well as on nails. However, do not apply on scalp in children and senior patients. Massage the cream into the skin.
Leave the cream on for 8-14 hours and then wash it off by taking a shower or bath. Remember to thoroughly massage it on the body.
Elemite is to be used on the skin only and use it as directed by your doctor. Follow exact dosage directions.
It is possible that you may experience itchiness after treatment or using Elemite.
Warnings
Avoid contact of Elemite with your eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina. In case the cream gets into your eyes, flush it out with water. If the medication gets in your eyes, flush the eyes with plenty of water. Rush to your doctor if irritation persists.
Never swallow or take this medication orally. It is strictly to be used on the skin and hair in humans. To avoid infection or irritation do not apply to broken skin or cuts and open wounds.
If the patient is allergic to Permethrin or to chrysanthemums, then this medicine is not for them. Patient should reform his/her health and hygiene habits in order to prevent reinfection or spreading of infection to other people. Sexual or intimate contact is to be avoided until the lice have been removed. Do not share your items of personal use like hair brush, bed sheets, combs, hair accessories etc with others.
Missed dose
Since Permethrin topical is usually needed only once, you are not likely to be on a dosing schedule. Wait at least 7 days before using a second application.
Elemite Side Effects
Almost all medicines and drugs have minor or severe side-effects. Some may be harmless while others may prove to be bothersome. The following are some of the side-effects -burning, itching, numbness, rash, redness, stinging, swelling, or tingling of the scalp. If these prevail or are bothering consult your doctor.
Proper storage of Elemite
Elemite is to be stored at room temperature. Room temperature: 68 to 77 Degrees F or 20 to 25o C. It is to be kept in a tightly closed container. Keep Elemite away from sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not place it in bathrooms. Keep Elemite out of the reach of children and away from pets.
