Gris-Peg General Information
Griseofulvin belongs to the group of medicines called antifungals. It is used to treat fungus infections of the skin, hair, fingernails, and toenails. This medicine may be taken alone or used along with medicines that are applied to the skin for fungus infections. It is availabe in Oral, Capsules, Suspension and tablet form.
Gris-Peg Uses
It is used to cure fungal infections of skin. Griseofulvin is absorbed best when it is taken with a high fat meal, such as a cheeseburger, whole milk, or ice cream.
Griseofulvin works best with or after meals, especially fatty ones. This lessens possible stomach upset and helps to clear up the infection by helping the body absorb the medicine better. The doctor shall be informed if the patient is on low-fat diet.
How to take Gris-Peg
The dose of griseofulvin will be different for different patients. The number of capsules or tablets or teaspoonfuls of suspension prescribed depend on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which a pateint is taking griseofulvin.
When taking oral liquid form the dose should be measured precisely. The treatment shall not be abandoned even if the infection disappears after few uses and doses shall not be missed.
Gris-Peg Warnings
This drug should not be used if the patient is taking oral contraceptive pills and anti-coagulants as Griseofulvin may decrease their function. Moreover, the presence of other medical problems may affect the use of griseofulvin, thus the doctor should be informed if a patient suffers form some other problems.
Gris-Peg Missed dose
If a dose is missed of this medicine, it should be taken as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to the regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
Gris-Peg Overdose
Contact your nearest Poison center or Medical centre and get help if the patient uses too much of this medicine.
The symptoms of an overdose are not known.
Gris-Peg Side Effects
Griseofulvin has been shown to cause liver and thyroid tumors in some animals. It may cause headaches, diarrhea; dizziness; nausea or vomiting; stomach pain; trouble in sleeping; unusual tiredness. Immediate doctors' help should be sought.
Proper storage of Gris-Peg
Gris-Peg is to be stored at room temperature. Room temperature: 68 to 77 Degrees F or 20 to 25o C. It is to be kept in a tightly closed container. Keep Gris-Peg away from sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not place it in bathrooms. Keep Gris-Peg out of the reach of children and away from pets.
