Imitrex General Information
Imitrex tablets and nasal spray are used to treat migraine headaches. Though it relieves a headache but it does not aid in prevention or redution of migraine attacks.
Its Generic name is Sumatriptan.
Imitrex Uses
Imitrex is believed to work by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain. It also reduces substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.
How to use Imitrex
It should be strictly used according to presciption.
The tablet should be taken as a whole with a glass of water as soon as the pateint notices headache symptoms. If the headache persists a second tablet shall be taken 2 hours after the first dose. However the dose should not exceed 200 mg of Imitrex tablet in 24 hours.
Nasal sprays should be used as written on the medicine. Before spraying, the nose should be blown to clear the passage. Do not use more than 40 mg of Imitrex nasal spray in 24 hours.
Imitrex Warnings
The drug should not be used if the patient is allergic to sumatriptan, or if the pateint has ischemic bowel disease, severe liver disease, severe high blood pressure, or a history of heart disease, angina, circulation problems, heart attack, or stroke. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other drugs, as Imitrex can cause reaction with certain medicines. Imitrex can cause side effects that may impair thinking or reactions. Therefore the patient needs to be cautious if driving or doing anything that requires vigiliance.
Imitrex Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include tremors or shaking, skin redness, breathing problems, blue-colored lips or fingernails, vision problems, watery eyes or mouth, weakness, lack of coordination, or seizure (convulsions) and emergency medical treatment should be sought if these symptoms occur.
Imitrex Side Effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Proper storage of Imitrex
Imitrex is to be stored at room temperature. Room temperature: 68 to 77 Degrees F or 20 to 25o C. It is to be kept in a tightly closed container. Keep Imitrex away from sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not place it in bathrooms. Keep Imitrex out of the reach of children and away from pets.

What happens if I miss a dose?
If the patient misses a dose then take the missed dose as soon as possible. If the scheduled next dose is near then skip the missed dose. Continue the rest of the course as usual. Do not take any other medicine to cover up the missed dose.
