Prilosec General Information
Prilosec is primarily taken to treat the anomaly of stomach acid entering the throat by flushing upwards.
This medicine is also used to treat other gastrointestinal problems caused by excess stomach acid and also for gastric ulcers.
Prilosec Uses
Prilosec is used to treat heartburn or irritation caused by too much secretion of stomach acids.
Hence this is primarily tasked to treat ailments related to the stomach, esophagus (food pipe) and intestines
Sometimes used for treatment of ulcers of the stomach or small intestines.
How Take Prilosec
Always take medicines as directed by your physician. For Prilosec, keep the following things in mind while consuming the medicine:
- Most recommended dosage : Once or twice a day, for 14 days, half an hour before meal
- The dosage varies with age and medical condition being treated for.
- Prilosec is usually taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water.
- Swallow the whole pill and it must not be broken, crushed or chewed.
- You can also create a mix of warm applesauce and the Prilosec pellets (open the capsule for the same) and swallow the mixture at once.
Prilosec Warnings
Always consult your physician before consuming Prilosec. It is not advised in the following cases:
- Pregnancy or breast-feeding
- Other medications
- Allergies to medicines, and other substances
- Gastro-intestinal problems including cancer
- Problems in swallowing
- Other problems like bloody or black stools, frequent chest pains, heartburn with wheezing, unexplained weight loss, nausea or vomiting or stomach pain.
Prilosec Missed Dose
In case you miss a dose, take it as soon as it is remembered, and then follow the normal schedule as advised. Do not double the dose unless the physician advises.

Internal: Abdominal and back pain, headache, nausea, sore throat, taste alteration, tongue discoloration, constipation, depression, loss of appetite, urinary tract infections
External: Diarrhea, vomiting, Flu symptoms, nasal inflammation, allergic skin reactions Weight gain, Vertigo, Hair loss
Prilosec Storage Advice
It is advised to store Prilosec in tightly closed containers at room temperatures, away from light and moisture.
Prilosec Overdose
The effects of an overdose vary with the amount of over dose taken. In an event of taking an overdose, the under-mentioned symptoms may be noticed. Please call your physician to seek emergency medical attention.
Symptoms of the overdose can be:
- Internal: fast heartbeat, nausea, headache, dry mouth, or Confusion
- External: Drowsiness, blurred vision, vomiting, sweating
Prilosec More Information
Prilosec should not be used for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.
Prilosec should not be administered to children below the age of 18years, unless a physician prescribes it under strict medical guidelines.
One must follow the doctor's instructions regarding any advised limitations on food and liquid intake
When one advised dosage is finished, one must let at least 4 months to pass before a similar treatment is advised.
