Zithromax General Information
Zithromax is an antibiotic for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate infections. It fights bacteria in the body that can cause respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections and sexually transmitted diseases.
Zithromax Uses
Zithromax is a macrolide antibiotic. Zithromax acts as a good substitute for children who are allergic to penicillin. In children, Zithromax is used to treat pneumonia, acute ear infections, tonsillitis or pharyngitis. Zithromax can be taken either with or without food.
How Take Zithromax
You can take Zithromax for the time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated.
For younger children, Zithromax syrup is given, it is flavored so that the child enjoys. Zithromax should be given in empty stomach, or may be 1-2 hours before having the meal. This will minimize the side effects.
For treating most types of common bacterial infections, the suggested dose of Zithromax is 250mg or 500mg. The dose must be taken for three to five days. However if you have a severe infection, your doctor may continue treatment for an extended period. For treating sexually transmitted diseases, the recommended dosage is 1g to 2g, which is to be given one time only.
Zithromax Warnings
Although Zithromax is safe for use in children, its safety for the treatment of children under 6 months of age have not been established yet.
You must inform your Pediatrician if your child is taking other medications.
If your child vomits right away after taking the medicine, you must need to get a new prescription.
Zithromax should not be taken in any of the following conditions:
- Kidney disease,
- Liver disease,
- A heart rhythm disorder
You must inform your doctor if you are pregnant during treatment or if you have a breast-feeding baby.
Zithromax Missed Dose
Whenever you miss a dose, you should take the dose that is missed immediately after you remember it. If it is the time for your next dose, you should skip the missed dose and take the scheduled dose next time. You should not take an extra medicine in an effort to make up the missed dose.
Zithromax Side Effects
The most common side effects of Zithromax are:
- Vomiting, mild nausea, constipation, diarrhea, or stomach pain,
- Headache, dizziness, or tired feeling,
- Sleep problems (insomnia), nervous feeling,
- Vaginal discharge or itching,
- Skin rash or mild itching,
- Decreased sense of taste or smell
Zithromax Storage Advice
Zithromax should be stored at room temperature (25oc - 30 oc) away from moisture and heat. You must throw away any medicine, which is unused after 10 days.
Zithromax Overdose
You must seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.
An overdose of Zithromax may cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and stomach discomfort.
