Zoloft General Information
Zoloft is a medicine used for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
Zoloft works by affecting the chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and hence cause panic, depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms.
Zoloft Uses
Zoloft is very effective and very well tolerated for the treatment of depression and certain anxiety conditions.
Zoloft is effective in the treatment of depression and certain types of social anxiety conditions, in adults over age 18. It is also used for children and adolescents of age 6-17 years.
How Take Zoloft
You must take Zoloft exactly the way it has been prescribed for you by your doctor. The Zoloft recommended dosage for adults with depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder is 50mg. the medication is to be taken once a day.
The starting dose for people with post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, or social anxiety disorder is typically 25mg daily. Depending upon the severity of the problem, the doctors often increase that dose to 50mg daily. The recommended dosage of Zoloft for children is usually 25mg daily.
Zoloft can be taken with or without food.
Zoloft Warnings
You must tell your doctor if you have any of the following before you start taking Zoloft:
- Kidney or liver disease,
- Bipolar disorder (manic depression), or
- Seizures or epilepsy,
- A history of suicidal thoughts or drug abuse
Zoloft must not be given to anyone who is younger than 18 years old, without the advice of a doctor.
Zoloft Missed Dose
You must take the medicine strictly the way your doctor has prescribed it. Whenever you miss a dose, you must take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, you can skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time.
Zoloft Side Effects
Zoloft side effects may be the following:
- Dizziness, drowsiness, tired feeling;
- Stomach pain, mild nausea, constipation, upset stomach;
- Dry mouth;
- Changes in weight or appetite;
- Sleep problems (insomnia); or
- Impotence, decreased sex drive, or difficulty in having an orgasm.
If you have any of the following new or worsening symptoms, you must seek medical advice at once:
Behavior changes or mood, anxiety, trouble sleeping, panic attacks,
If you feel irritable, impulsive, agitated, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically),
Have thoughts or more depression, or about hurting yourself or suicide.
Zoloft Storage Advice
Zoloft should be stored in room temperature between 15 and 30°C. It should be kept away from heat and light. Zoloft should not be stored in damp and wet place. Zoloft should be kept away from the reach of children.
Zoloft Overdose
You must seek emergency medical attention if you think you have taken too much of this medication. Symptoms of a Zoloft overdose may include drowsiness, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, rapid heartbeat, tremor, agitation, confusion and coma.
Zoloft More Information
You must avoid drinking alcohol, as this can increase some of the side effects of Zoloft. Zoloft can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
You should tell your doctor if you use other medicines that make you sleepy (such as cold or allergy medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants and medicine for seizures or anxiety). They can increase the sleepiness caused by Zoloft.
